I am here to share with you, the secrets to living a happy, healthy life. My name is To, that's pronounced like the number "2". I think my grandfather gave me that name. I am the youngest of seven siblings. My three oldest sisters were raised in China, and four of us were born and raised in New York City. My parents ran a small laundry in Woodside, Queens. The six of us lived in the back of the laundry, in a 400 square foot space, until I was eight years old. I cannot say enough about how proud I am, of my parents. Despite all the hardships they encountered, moving to a foreign land, struggling with a new language and no marketable skills, they never lost sight of family values. There was never a lack of love in that small back room, behind the laundry. I miss them very much.

This year, I hit the ripe young age of 60. I feel like life is just getting started. There is still so much I would like to accomplish for myself and for others. I know that if I work on being a better person and stay focused on my goals, tomorrow will be better than yesterday. My career in the film industry is just a passing thing. Working on bettering friendships and leaving a legacy for my family are things that will last forever. Most people see the serious side of me, but my friends have experienced the love, empathy and compassion I have for them. They also do not know when I am serious or playing a prank. I love to play practical jokes and make people laugh.

A few years back, my wife would have to kidnap me, for me to go for my annual physical. I realized, if I did not stay healthy, my wife would be a widow and my daughter would not have her dad, to one day, walk her down the aisle. I started to eat healthier, and sort of exercise. After my annual physical this year, my doctor said, do this, stop eating these things, eat this instead, and take these vitamins. I did what she recommended. I cut out the hamburgers, started eating more salmon and take my vitamins and baby aspirin every day. Since then, I've lost about ten pounds and feel so much better. I've only gone to In-and-Out two times in the last three months! Recently, an old friend and co-worker, working on location on a TV show, woke up, had chest pains and died. He was only 54. Sometimes, it takes a tragic event to make us change our ways. The message my friend left was, be good to people, take care of yourself and be right with God. I know I have to take my "health habits" to the next level.

There is no one thing, that makes up a healthy lifestyle. We have all heard that we must eat well, and exercise to stay healthy. The part that few talk about is maintaining a healthy attitude. How you look, up to age 30, depends on how well you take care of yourself. Over 30, your appearance is more of a reflection of who you are - your attitude, happiness and the love you share and receive. I found out that the "over 30" part is the easiest part to achieve, especially when I have my girls in my life, my wife of 28 years and my daughter. I love them so much.

  1. Thanks for getting your blog up and running, To!

How frequently would you say you exercise? And, what type of activities do you choose when exercising?

When you think about taking your health habits to the next level, do you have any particular goals or steps in mind?

    Thanks!

  2. I go through my exercise routine almost every day. My routine consist of a brisk two mile walk, in the hills where I live, working out with dumbbells - various forms of curls and presses and sit-ups. I knew, if I did it often enough, it would become a habit. Now, I feel guilty if I miss a day. I cut down on my exercises when I am working. Working as a camera assistant in the motion picture industry, is a very fast paced physical job.

My current exercises may keep me physically fit, but it falls short of what I need to do, to stay healthy. I need to lose another ten pounds and keep my heart healthy. To accomplish this, I want do more cardiovascular exercises.

I recently read that aerobics exercises are more effective in losing weight, than resistance exercises. It not only tones your muscles, but it helps with weight loss by burning calories at a faster rate. It is most effective for burning belly fat, which can lead to heart disease. I would love to jog or run, but the pain becomes too severe, due to the worn out cartilage in my knees. I am working on getting a bicycle or an elliptical machine. Until that time comes, I will increase my brisk walk to four miles.

Exercising is the best bargain in life, you get more out of it, than you put into it.
